What Makes You Come Alive? Acting into Your Own Story
“I don’t think [the meaning of life] is what we’re seeking. I think [it’s] an experience of being alive… so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”
— Joseph Campbell
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
— Howard Thurman
What if your most sacred calling isn’t something you have to chase—but something you’re already doing? That’s the mystery and gift of aliveness through action. It doesn’t require a grand spiritual awakening or a life overhaul. It can begin with something as simple—and as profound—as picking up a guitar or walking barefoot on the beach.
I (Steve) know this in my bones. Playing the guitar, even on hard days, draws something out of me that feels true and whole. As Neil Diamond once sang:
“Me and you are subject to the blues now and then, but when you take the blues and make a song, you sing them out again.”
Even sorrow can become sacred when shaped into song. One of my own songs—Heart of the Warrior—was born this way, transforming pain into healing.
Another small but powerful ritual is walking down the beach. The sand, the sea air, the endless horizon—nature calls me back to myself. It’s not just poetic. A 2010 study found that spending time in nature increases vitality and restores psychological energy.
So, here’s your invitation:
What are the actions—big or small—that make you come alive?
Not what you should do, but what you love to do.
When you act from that place, you’re not just ticking boxes—you’re telling your story. And you’re offering something the world deeply needs: a person who is fully, vibrantly alive.
